A back garden organised around one long stone wall, with everything else arranged off it.
The wall is dry-laid ledgestone, capped flat and run at seat height so it doubles as bench and retainer. It separates the paved dining terrace from the beds behind, and gives the whole garden a spine to work from.
Two surfaces, one route
The terrace is poured and finished smooth for furniture; the secondary path is fine gravel, curving away around the beds. Boulders are set at the junctions where the two surfaces meet, so the change of material happens against stone rather than in mid-air.
Planting and light
Grasses, low shrubs and flowering perennials are layered up the bank behind the wall, with a small tree carrying height at the far end. Path lights and uplighters are placed to graze the wall face and lift the planting, which is what keeps the garden usable on summer evenings.
